Any great advocacy efforts may fail due to nonexistent, weak, or fragmented coalitions. The prisoner’s dilemma known from game theory is still valid in this case, too. No issue exists in a vacuum. So is yours. Interim coalitions and strategic alliances are a determinant of the success of any advocacy effort. Mobilizing support for your aims among professional associations, think-tanks, pressure groups, refining it at the grass-roots level — all of it adds considerably to the credibility and legitimacy of your case. It can ultimately shape the environment in which you operate and predict an outcome with a high degree of certainty.
During the panel, the speakers will discuss:
- How to assess the landscape, build up and foster partnerships and then end up winning coalitions under new conditions
- How stakeholder resources (e.g., money, political, and community connections) shape the composition of coalitions and affect formal and informal relationships within
- What makes third-party endorsements succeed or fail
- How to manage escalating conflicts that arise amid coalition governance and handle them without undermining its foundations
